The art of planning ahead

Do you ever catch yourself frustrated and thinking, “Oh, I wish I would have…_______.” The blank can be filled in with simple things like remembering to buy that birthday gift when you were at the mall the other day or making that freezer-friendly meal last week for the unexpected company now at your door. Or the blank can be filled with bigger things like managing your time better in order to meet your work deadlines or ensuring that your family has quality time together each week.

Lack of planning is the common thread that ties these “Oh, darn.” moments together.

The good news is that with a little organization you can eliminate this pattern. Take a moment and think about how making time to plan ahead could improve your life.

Go on – imagine what it would be like to eliminate that unnecessary, stupid kind of stress from your life.

In order to do this you have to practice the art of planning ahead. Sounds scary, but all it really requires is making some time to think about what you need to do, what you want to do, and when you are going to do it all.

Now, you might be tempted to tell yourself that December isn’t the right time to start and you’ll just get by until the New Year, and then, just like every other year, you’ll get “totally organized”. Right.

With your to-do list and calendar quickly filling up, December is actually the perfect time to start planning ahead. After all, less time running around means more time to actually enjoy the holiday season.

Remember Benjamin Franklin’s warning to those who refuse to make time to plan ahead. “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”
