What it is a Capsule Wardrobe:
The capsule wardrobe concept has been around for over 40 years and seems to be making a comeback. We’ve all seen Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, with his t-shirt uniform. This is a very basic form of a capsule wardrobe. If you are interested in minimizing your clothing and only having items you love to wear, a capsule wardrobe might be a good option for you. A capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that can be augmented with seasonal pieces.
What to include in your Capsule Wardrobe:
You already have a capsule wardrobe in your collection of clothes. It is the 12 or so items that are in the laundry every week. Your favorite slacks for work, your favorite jeans, and your favorite tops. These clothes that are classic that you love to wear no matter the season. Items that you can mix and match with the ability to layer is what goes into your capsule. After you narrow down your basic wardrobe, then you can add a few seasonal or trendy pieces to jazz it up. If needed you can have two capsules, one for everyday life and one for work.
Why have a Capsule Wardrobe:
The benefits of a capsule wardrobe are numerous. Number one, in my opinion, is that with a capsule wardrobe your closet is easy to organize. You will find things easily so getting ready is quick. You will wash things faster to get it back into your closet, which means fewer piles of laundry. After having a capsule for a while, you will find you lose the desire to randomly buy clothing. Each item you buy will be very intentional which may mean the item purchased is more expensive but in the long run you’ll be saving money.
What not to do with a Capsule Wardrobe:
Don’t settle for items you don’t love. If it looks good and you love the way you feel in it, then your capsule will work for you. If you stick a bad fitting pair of black slacks in your capsule just because they go with everything, then you will be wanting for more clothing. You have to love everything. Don’t follow someone else’s recipe for a capsule wardrobe. Again, one person may love wearing black slacks but if you never wear them, then they don’t need to be in your capsule. Yes, they are a basic staple but only if you wear them. Keep what you love and wear in your capsule.
How to get started creating a Capsule Wardrobe:
To get started, do a weed out of your clothes. Be very intentional of what you keep. If you’re not completely on board with this idea but want to give it a try, you might just want to pack the clothes away in a bin and put on your closet shelf. If you’re full in then your favorite charity would love the donation. After the initial weed out, you might still have more then you desire. At this point turn all your hangers backwards. After you wear an item, you can turn the hanger around. After a month, you will see what you always wear and all the items on backwards hangers can be removed from your closet. Now, if it’s the middle of winter, don’t get rid of your favorite shorts. This process should not happen in one week. Take your time and be very intentional. If, you do this, you will have a capsule wardrobe that you love. You will be able to walk out the door each morning feeling confident and beautiful.
